You Deserve Better Than "One-Size-Fits-All" Physical Therapy

Traditional PT clinics treat you like a number—short sessions, rotating therapists, and treatment plans dictated by insurance companies instead of your unique needs. You're stuck doing exercises that don't address the real problem, wasting time with heating pads and ice packs, and wondering why your pain keeps coming back.

Your Time Is Wasted on Passive Treatments

Insurance-based clinics fill your sessions with heating pads and ice—not the hands-on care and movement coaching you actually need to heal.

You're Treated Like a Checkbox, Not a Person

When your therapist only spends 15 minutes with you before moving to the next patient, there's no time to truly understand your goals or address the root cause.

Your Recovery Takes Longer Than It Should

Generic treatment plans and limited one-on-one time mean slower progress, more visits, and frustration when you're still in pain weeks later.

"Dr. Jacob is one of the best I've gone to for my back issues. He makes his patients feel comfortable and explains things in depth when needed. I went to multiple different people before Dr. Jacob and it was stressful having to explain the workouts I do and the training I follow—however, Dr. Jacob already knew what I was talking about and created a plan for me to follow. Dr. Jacob has helped my back pain and strengthened the issue to prevent future problems. I recommend him to anyone that needs physical therapy! He will not forget about you and will continue making sure you're taken care of!"

"Dr. Jacob Retzer is fantastic. He does a great job making his patients feel comfortable and let's you know what to expect every step of the way. When I initially went to see him, I was in a great deal of pain and he made me feel validated and understood. I would highly recommend to anyone in need of physical therapy services!"
Cassidy Prince
"Definitely enjoyed my experience at Unbound PT. Jacob gave some very helpful fitness and physical therapy advice and emails you video tutorials after visits instead of still pictures of how to perform the movements. Jacob is very professional and knows exactly how to solve your physical therapy needs and works with you one-on-one. Highly recommend this place if you're running into problems with strength training or with general physical therapy."
Brandon Welch
"I highly recommend Unbound Physical Therapy. Dr. Jacob Retzer is extremely knowledgeable and took time to listen to my concerns. He explained all exercises and treatments in detail and followed up with email instructions. Within weeks my lower back pain was virtually gone. Patient care is his #1 priority which is difficult to find these days. I received excellent care and I am so happy to finally have relief from the pain. Unbound Physical Therapy has given me my life back."

Dr. Jacob P Retzer, PT, DPT

I grew up in the mountains outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico where I enjoyed spending time outside hiking, camping, hunting, biking and snowboarding. When not outside my time was spent training in martial arts and competing at an international level in TaeKwonDo. After graduating high school I attended the University of New Mexico in which I received my bachelors degree in biology and psychology. After completing my undergraduate education I completed my doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota.

After completing my doctoral education, my family and I moved to rural Montana where I was able to practice and hone my skills as a therapist working with individuals across the lifespan. I was able to work with outdoor athletes (hunters, hikers, runners, and snowmobilers), weekend warriors, crossfitters, gymnasts, highschool athletes, and those who wanted to get back to daily activities without restriction. Being a primary care provider in a rural area helped solidify the importance of treating the whole person including nutrition, sleep, mental health and not just the physical ailments that they are experiencing.

After four years in Montana my family and I decided to move back to Bismarck where I worked in multiple settings before deciding to open my own clinic. This decision came from the desire to provide individuals with the highest level of one on one care helping them to take control of their health. My goal is to help patients alleviate pain, increase performance and assist them in becoming the best version of themselves through increased knowledge in various areas of patient care including strength and conditioning, manual therapy, dry needling and pain science. I enjoy working with clients of all ages and impairments but have a high interest in outdoor athletes, especially archery hunters.

When not in the clinic, I enjoy being outdoors with my wife and two children camping, hiking and hunting. I also enjoy participating in Crossfit and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about physical therapy in Mandan? We've got answers. If you don't see your question here, give us a call at (701) 390-9773.

Do you take my insurance?

At Unbound we are a hybrid cash-based clinic. This means that we are in-network for very few insurance companies—Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota and Sanford. Being an out-of-network provider allows for patient care to be dictated by your unique condition and personal needs, NOT your insurance plan. This allows Dr. Retzer to spend greater time on assessment and hands-on treatment and address the musculoskeletal issues of each patient. Recovery from injury is often much faster and more cost-effective compared to the high deductible and co-pays required through the insurance-based model.

Do I need a referral from an MD?

No! The state of North Dakota has direct access for all physical therapy services. This means that physical therapists can assess and treat patients within their scope of practice without any form of a doctor's referral. Having quick or immediate access to physical therapy can often be the difference between your condition being acute/temporary versus chronic. We encourage you to call us immediately if you experience an injury or have pain. We will work with your physician or other healthcare provider in the coordination of your treatment so you can concentrate on healing.

What can I expect from my first visit?

For a physical therapy evaluation, we will email you our intake form prior to your first scheduled visit. Your first appointment will be approximately 60 minutes and consist of a detailed review of your past and present medical history, a movement assessment, hands-on treatment, an education session on corrective exercises, and treatment goals. Athletic clothing is most appropriate for evaluation and any additional treatment sessions.

Can I bill my insurance for reimbursement?

Yes! Most non-Medicare patients can send "self-claims" to their insurance company for their treatments at our clinic. You should be able to print claim forms from your insurance company's website and send it in with the needed receipts and treatment codes that will be provided upon request at our clinic. The amount of reimbursement or application towards your deductible is completely dependent on your insurance plan. If you call your insurance company to inquire about what you can expect to receive, you should ask about reimbursement for "out-of-network Physical Therapy" expenses sent in via self-claims.

Can I use my flexible spending account (FSA) or my health savings account (HSA)?

Absolutely! We accept FSA/HSA as we are considered an essential healthcare service.
