Knee Pain Physical Therapy in Bismarck, ND
Get back to running, lifting, and living without limitations. At Unbound Physical Therapy, we treat the root cause of your knee pain—not just the symptoms—so you can stay active during recovery.

Is Knee Pain Keeping You From What You Love?
Traditional PT clinics treat you like a number—short sessions, rotating therapists, and treatment plans dictated by insurance companies instead of your unique needs. You're stuck doing exercises that don't address the real problem, wasting time with heating pads and ice packs, and wondering why your pain keeps coming back.
Can't Train Like You Used To
Your knee pain is forcing you to skip workouts, cut runs short, or avoid the activities that keep you feeling strong.
Tired of One-Size-Fits-All Advice
You need more than generic exercises. You need a plan that understands your body, your goals, and why this happened in the first place.
Worried It's Getting Worse
You've tried rest, ice, and over-the-counter fixes, but the pain keeps coming back—or it's getting harder to ignore.

We Fix the Root Cause—Not Just the Pain
At Unbound Physical Therapy, you'll work one-on-one with Dr. Jacob Retzer, a Doctor of Physical Therapy who specializes in keeping active adults and athletes moving. Every session is a full hour of hands-on treatment, movement analysis, and education designed around your goals.
We don't waste your time with heating pads or generic protocols. Instead, we focus on what actually works: finding the underlying issue causing your knee pain, strengthening the right areas, and keeping you active throughout your recovery.
One-on-one sessions with a Doctor of Physical Therapy—no assistants or techs
Evidence-based techniques including dry needling, manual therapy, and corrective exercises
Individualized treatment plans that address why your knee hurts, not just where
"Dr. Retzer is an amazing physical therapist who has really taken the time to get to know me and my 'problems.' Every session I feel like we make progress daily and have never felt progress like this before. I have been to several clinics around town and have not made progress like this. I highly recommend if you are looking for a well educated physical therapist who takes his time to work on your goals… you found the place. I highly recommend Unbound hands down!!!"

At Unbound we are a hybrid cash-based clinic. This means that we are in-network for very few insurance companies—Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota and Sanford. Being an out-of-network provider allows for patient care to be dictated by your unique condition and personal needs, NOT your insurance plan. This allows Dr. Retzer to spend greater time on assessment and hands-on treatment and address the musculoskeletal issues of each patient. Recovery from injury is often much faster and more cost-effective compared to the high deductible and co-pays required through the insurance-based model.
No! The state of North Dakota has direct access for all physical therapy services. This means that physical therapists can assess and treat patients within their scope of practice without any form of a doctor's referral. Having quick or immediate access to physical therapy can often be the difference between your condition being acute/temporary versus chronic. We encourage you to call us immediately if you experience an injury or have pain. We will work with your physician or other healthcare provider in the coordination of your treatment so you can concentrate on healing.
For a physical therapy evaluation, we will email you our intake form prior to your first scheduled visit. Your first appointment will be approximately 60 minutes and consist of a detailed review of your past and present medical history, a movement assessment, hands-on treatment, an education session on corrective exercises, and treatment goals. Athletic clothing is most appropriate for evaluation and any additional treatment sessions.
Yes! Most non-Medicare patients can send "self-claims" to their insurance company for their treatments at our clinic. You should be able to print claim forms from your insurance company's website and send it in with the needed receipts and treatment codes that will be provided upon request at our clinic. The amount of reimbursement or application towards your deductible is completely dependent on your insurance plan. If you call your insurance company to inquire about what you can expect to receive, you should ask about reimbursement for "out-of-network Physical Therapy" expenses sent in via self-claims.
Absolutely! We accept FSA/HSA as we are considered an essential healthcare service.
